He captured that world so accurately that Hemingway regarded it as the finest novel to come out of the war. The censor regarded it as unprintable, and so the book first saw light of day as The Middle Parts of Fortune by Private 19022 published by a private press in a limited edition in 1929. The later title Her Privates We (another Shakespeare quote) was given to a censored version for wider publication, but still without full acknowledgement of the real author. This work stand's shoulder to shoulder with Parade's End as one of the defining novels of the period.
